| This song is about relationships where there were a bunch of role reversals, like you loving someone and someone is being with you, but you realize that this person actually wants to be with someone else and that you're basically a back up love affair. I guess most people after the age of 18 can relate to it or have been thru this kind of stuff... In retrospect I realize I have been a substitute myself, as my previous partners have been substitutes as well. You know, it happens all the time... The melody of the song was subconsciously already in my head, but it took my friend Claude during the kitchen sessions to trigger everything, which made that the song was written initially in five minutes. Over a course of 3-4 months it took its present form. |
